UA MEC's "Orwellian" Theatre

Orwellian1The membership will NOT stand silent and be dictated to any longer by the self-appointed Afa International and the s-UA MEC Officers who were NEVER elected by the membership!

The UA MEC has chosen to "Declare War" on over half of its membership. In a libelous letter to its s-UA flight attendants in the AFA E-lines on July 19, 2012, making false accusations and lies, UA MEC President Greg Davidowitch declares the CAL MEC and FACC "will be dealt with". "Orwellian" connotes an "attitude and a policy of control by propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, denial of truth, manipulation of the past, and destructive to free society," (as described by George Orwell - English novelist and journalist).

This is not "Orwellian" theatre. This is about the quality of our work lives. We have the RIGHT to tell our leaders how WE want OUR union to be run. We are an intelligent, educated workforce and we demand the right to be heard. The power and leverage at the bargaining table lies in the membership and what WE want, not what our so called "leaders" believe is "best for us". Empower the membership and let us decide.

The job created the union, not the other way around. Unions are a necessary component to improve the pay and working conditions associated with a particular job, but it is the employees themselves doing that job who are in charge of the union and its ultimate direction. We are free to choose who leads us going forward - it is our RIGHT and we will not be silenced by thinly veiled threats of retribution, up to and including discharge from the Company.

LEVELED AT CAL MEC AND THE FACC!!

The accusations leveled against the CAL MEC and FACC simply have no basis in fact, and serve only to illustrate the hysterical hyperbole the UA MEC uses when they feel threatened by people daring to express an opposing viewpoint. It is not surprising that an organization so accustomed to back room politicking and personal political agendas, would concoct the type of conspiratorial paranoia so evident in the UA MEC's July 19, 2012 AFA E-lines. Perhaps UA MEC feels emboldened by :

Article X of the Afa Constitution and Bylaws (C&B)

"Any member, regardless of membership status, may be FINED, SUSPENDED, EXPELLED OR OTHERWISE DISCIPLINED FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ACTS: I. Acting in any manner to circumvent, defeat or interfere with COLLECTIVE BARGAINING BETWEEN THE UNION AND AN EMPLOYER OR WITH EXISTING COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTS. j. Doing any act contrary to the best interests of the Union or its members. Acting in any manner disloyal to the Union.

The FACC began posting information in the hopes of changing the s-UA MEC into a more responsive, truly "member-driven" advocate for WORKING flight attendants at the new United Airlines. We have NEVER published any information from the CAL MEC that was confidential, privileged, or not available on any public resource.

Any flight attendant at any airline can access the public pages of any CWA Afa represented carrier, as well as financial disclosure reports from the Department of Labor, and full copies of collective bargaining agreements at the National Mediation Board's Knowledge Store.

We support the CAL MEC by CHOICE - not by instruction, coercion, or direction. We have NEVER been directed, coerced, or in any way controlled by the CAL MEC. Since the legal merger between United and Continental Airlines closed in October 2010, s-CO membership ratified two tentative agreements, with improvements and protections. It is the UA MEC alone that envisions a long, drawn out process for every negotiations (the last 30 years) including the future joint contract talks. The recently ratified s-UA contract has an amendable date of 2016 (two years beyond s-CO's amendable date of 2014).

The heavy handed threats and intimidation being aired only serve to underscore the lengths to which one group will go to preserve power, even to the detriment of the people it supposedly represents.

UA MEC - DESPERATE?

UA MEC and the LECP of DCA alleges that a secret FACC page exists. The FACC Facebook page they reference DOES NOT EXIST! The FACC does not maintain a Facebook page of any sort, under any pseudonym, acronym or otherwise. We only communicate through our blog site and email. Any so called "evidence" to the contrary by the UA MEC is pure fabrication based on their fear and desperation.
After firing the first round of "threats" against CAL MEC and FACC in the July 19th E-Lines, the UA MEC responded to CAL MEC's strong rebuttal on July 21, 2012 stating:

"
We cannot, nor will we allow, underground activities intended to destroy our Solidarity to persist. Quite simply, there is too much at stake for us not to do so."

It is not a stretch in the least to compare this recent turn of events to the McCarthy era witch hunts of the 1950's - and what the CAL MEC is facing are similarly "demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations (and) public attacks on the character and/or patriotism of political opponents." But like the Army - McCarthy hearings of 1954, this promises to end badly for the UA MEC if they choose to pursue this course of action rather than simply focusing on the task at hand and preparing for the upcoming joint negotiations sessions scheduled to begin in late August. To label what is happening an attempt to "sabotage" contract negotiations or an "anti-union conspiracy" is paranoid delusion.

To paraphrase the Army's chief legal representative of the time, Joseph Nye Welch, we can only ask the UA MEC the same question he asked of Senator McCarthy -
"Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"
Drop the witch hunt and simply do the job you are paid to do!

Flight Attendant Unity

United is allowing the flight attendants to bend dress codes by swapping scarves and ties. The idea, according to a United blog, is to "tie" the two cultures together. The informal program was inspired by Kathe Hull, a JFK based United Flight Attendant (based on the original idea based on the hit books and movies, in which friends who are separated pass around a magic pair of jeans and keep up with each others doings via updates tucked in the pocket).

Hull kicked off the program by putting two of her United scarves in a small plastic bag with her name, base city and a note to a potential "scarf-sister" from Continental.
It has caught on like wild fire not only from coast to coast but in International domiciles. It has also achieved nationwide news coverage including NBC news and USA Today!

The Spoiler
The wonderful idea by a flight attendant, fully sanctioned by United Airlines, couldn't stop the UA MEC from threatening, yes, of all things, to file a Grievance in violation of s-UA's uniform contract (Section 16i). Because "if the company will sidestep this part of our contract, what else will they sidestep?" A terrific idea that’s simple, personal and very genuine turns the LEC's into supervisors at the domiciles and charged with being the
FASHION POLICE!
Sadly, the popular consensus is that the UA MEC won't have much luck with that either!
